Q & A With MEP Merja Kyllönen
Merja Kyllönen from Suomussalmi, Kainuu, is currently a member of the European Parliament. Previously she has also been a member of the Finnish parliament and the Minister of Transport of Finland. Merja has agreed to arrange a question and answer session with us at the Raatihuoneentori stage. Using our Webropol form, you may suggest your own questions to be included in the set. Europe Direct Kainuu reserves the right to select the questions to be presented.
If you would like to formulate your questions more carefully, you can find background information about Merja’s responsibilities on her introduction page Merja KYLLÖNEN | European Parliament. Of course, you can also ask about the activities of the European Parliament on a more general level or about any other topic related that interests you.
Culture Performances
Kainuu is multicultural. We have newcomers, a.k.a. new Europeans, also from further away. During the Europe Day afternoon, a set of multicultural talents will perform on the stage, but we’ll also experience more traditional Finnish performances.

Why Are We Celebrating and Who is Organising the Event?
Europe Day marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, presented on 9 May 1950. This signaled a new era for peace, integration and democratic cooperation in Europe, laying the foundations for the European Union as we know it today. Europe Day is celebrated annually on 9th May around Europe, also in Finland and Kainuu.
EUROPE DIRECT Kainuu is member of the Europe Direct network in Finland, which in turn is part of a Europe-wide family of centers. The centers make Europe accessible to people on the ground and get them engage in debates on the future of the EU. The network is managed by the European Commission.
