Kalevala lives in this time, even though our national epic has already reached 190 years of age. Did you know, that Kalevala was born in Kainuu region?
Kalevala week starts in Kuhmo on Friday 21.2. On the actual Kalevala Day, Friday 28.2. a traditional evening party is organized in both Kuhmo and Kajaani. In Suomussalmi there will also be a Kalevala Day singing event. Kuhmo’s Kalevala Day celebration will be held in Juminkeko from 6 p.m. Kajaani’s Kalevala Day event starts in Kaukametsä, Kouta hall on 28.2. at 6 p.m.
This year there is an opportunity to experience the Kalevala in a new way: on Friday 28.2. in the lobby of the music institute in Kajaani, from 17:00 to 20:00, there is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Kalevala experience with the help of the latest game technology solutions. The Kalevala experience has been developed in an international project that combines literary tourism and immersive technologies. From Kainuu, the Kajaani University of Applied Sciences and the Regional Council of Kainuu are involved in the project. There will also be stories from partner countries: Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Sweden. The N-LiTe project is financed by the Interreg NPA program.
In spring 2024, the Kalevala received the European cultural heritage label.
