The Regional Council of Kainuu participates national and international projects that are in line with regional development strategies and programmes.
One of the ways for the Regional Council of Kainuu to implement the regional programme is by preparing and implementing own projects related to the organisations’ tasks and the focus points of the regional strategy. The organisation may also subcontract such activities, co-finance projects and/ or act as a partner in projects. International regional development policy initiatives are an important instrument for Kainuu.

EMRIE
EMRIE project themes are related to sustainable mining.
Implementation Period: 1.5.2025-31.7.2029
ZCI
ZCI project will focus on practical ways to create Zero Carbon Infrastructure in the participating 8 cities and regions.
Implementation Period: 28.2.2023-31.5.2027.
CHERRY
CHERRY project supports the resilience of Culture and Creative Industries after the COVID-19 emergency.

New North – Transport, Logistics and Security of Supply
The project aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation and to create a platform for continuous cooperation and systematic development work to ensure the smooth, safe, functional and sustainable operation of cross-border transport chains and accessibility.

N-Lite
The project will develop literary tourism on the NPA region.
Implementation period: 1.7.2023-30.6.2026
KAIPO
The project aims at improving and rooting cooperation and production models between the regions, municipalities and cultural operators in Kainuu and Northern Ostrobothnia.
