New ideas for visibility of culture in Kainuu

Almost 40 participants from different culture organisations were gathered in a fruitful meeting and communication workshop in Kajaani on 30.8.

Leena Hirvonen, who held the workshop, brought up media’s operating principles. She discussed the challenges related to especially the printed newspapers. She suggested the local actors to try to reach also beyond the local and regional media, to journals and media channels also “across the pond”, Vogue Scandinavia -e-magazine as an example.

According to Leena Hirvonen, vitality, economy, and a human being are highlighted as interesting leads in media. She was convinced that the media easily grabs lists, extraordinary stories, and wild ideas: Why wouldn’t we offer the road to Raate (a famous winter war historical route) as a location for a fashion magazine photo shoot?

The media trainer Leena Hirvonen recommended to look at one’s own activity with the eyes of an outsider and to see the hidden comicality of it.

The participants were thinking about what the secret of sports is as a much-followed news topic, and why the articles related to culture are disappearing from today’s media coverage. In the municipality of Sotkamo, Kainuu, a way to tackle this is to combine sports and culture.

In group works, there arose a lot of new culture-related ideas of which media could be interested in the future.

International project work supports the recovery of culture

The training and the networking were supported by an international project CHERRY, that supports culture to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The idea of the project is to share good practices between different European regions. The people in Kainuu should be proud of their own culture and skills in e.g., event production. To share this supports both the tourism in Kainuu, and the other regions’ own needs.
